While daily product deal websites like Woot have been thriving since 2004, it is the local daily deal websites like Groupon, Homerun and Living Social that have exploded on to the scene in 2010 with new ones like Kaloopa and Qponday launching each week. Shoppers can now find local deals on everything from restaurants to surf lessons and even teeth whitening.  More than just offering consumers a discount, these sites also offer shoppers a fresh take on local merchants and service providers in their neighborhoods that they might have otherwise overlooked. Shopping local daily deal websites is a great way to experience your city.

This year marked my first trip to “The Con” aka Comic-Con .  In case you hate the internet, don’t watch television or were recently in a coma, Comic-Con is the largest comic book and “popular arts” convention held.  It is based in San Diego and was attended by 125,000+ fans.  For four days crazed fans descend upon the San Diego Convention Center and surrounding Gaslamp District in search of a chance to preview new releases, attend panels with their favorite stars and creators and be totally immersed in the world of comic related and influenced entertainment. In a word it was overwhelming. In a slew of words I’d say; packed, frenzied, loud, exciting, exhausting and inspiring. As a trade show veteran, I thought I had seen it all. What follows are some observations and tips from a Comic-Con newbie…

At Tuesday we are lucky to count so many cool people among our friends, supporters and partners. We want you to meet the people who inspire us to do great work and keep us on our toes.

Q:  Name?

A: Nicole Walters

Q:  Company?

A: NBC Universal

Q: Title?

A: Digital Producer, Green is Universal and Healthy at NBCU

Q:  When did you first meet Tuesday Creative?

A: March 2009, when they bravely accepted an RFP to launch an iPhone app for Earth Week with a four week timeline!

Q:  What inspires you?

A: I’ve always been inspired by Nature. I spend so much of my time in front of, thinking about, and working with technology, that more than ever, I find solace in getting outdoors and appreciating the sounds, scents and sites of what’s “real”. It helps ground me.

Q:  What was the last film you saw at the movie theater?

A: Cop Out. Kevin Smith is one of my favorite film makers and fellow New Jerseyans.

Q:  What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?

A: At first I was going to skip this question because failure would never be a reason that I wouldn’t go for something, but then it hit me. Flying. I don’t mean in an airplane or any other kind of craft. I mean just standing at the edge of a precipice and taking off. If there was no way to fail at that, I’d do it all the time!

Q:  What technology most changed your life?

A: The Internet. I’ve either been learning about it, designing for it or working in it in some capacity since the 90s and without it, I don’t even know what I’d be doing with myself right now.

Q:  Who would win in a street fight between a Blackberry, iPhone and Droid? Why?

A: Droid. I’m basing this on the idea that each of these devices would acquire the fighting acumen of their most popular user base (or the people I see using these devices the most, anyway): Blackberry would be a businessman, iPhone would be an artsy hipster and Droid would be the blue collar worker. I’m putting my money on the guy whose job requires eye-hand coordination.

Q:  What is your favorite food?

A: Home-made Italian. Preferably my mom’s.

Q:  What are you listening to right now?

A: I’m on a Black Crowes bender right now. They just released their 20th anniversary album, Croweology, which is an acoustic reimagining of a selection of their song library over the last 20 years.

Q:  What are you currently reading?

A: The Field by Lynne McTaggart. It’s about the “zero point field” where some people believe everything is in the universe is connected.

Q:  Any new and exciting news you’d like to share with us?

A: We’ve got so many exciting things in the works at Green is Universal and Healthy at NBCU! I’d love to share all the details but it would be a bit premature. I can say this: stay tuned for our fourth annual Green Week kicking off on Sunday, November 14th where we will be launching a new facebook app! For more details as they come in, like us on www.facebook.com/greenisuniversal.

cableshow

Last month the 2010 Cable Show took center stage at the LA Convention Center giving top executives from cable operators, content producers, distribution networks and technology companies a chance to get together and explore the continually evolving industry. Of course a bevy of cable celebrities were also there to provide entertainment including The Kardashian’s, Omorosa, Hulk Hogan and many more. You should have seen the lines for pictures!

Scott Seward, our President, and I attended to support our partners and keep tabs on the latest developments in the cable industry. One particularly hot topic this year was EBIF, the industry supported Enhanced Binary Interchange Format being integrated into Comcast’s Xfinity Remote and other devices.  There was also a lively general session that brought together CEOs of from top cable, tech and entertainment companies for a discussion on evolving business models.  The panel emphasized the importance of ensuring that technology not be a barrier to content creators.   If you missed the show, don’t fret:  many of the individual sessions are recapped on the Cable Show Blog.
