I really enjoy these simple interpretations of well known movies by Viktor Hertz. Hertz credits the Noun Project for its pictograms which anyone can use free of charge.

A great benefit of living and working in and around Los Angeles is the steady exposure to great films, past and present. The American Film Institute (AFI) works to preserve that past and promote the films and filmmakers of today and tomorrow. One major showcase for achieving that goal is AFI Fest 2010, featured today on the official YouTube blog (post authored by Bob Jennings, Manager, AFI Social Media and Lane Kneedler, Associate Director of Programming). This year marked my first trip to “The Con” aka Comic-Con .  In case you hate the internet, don’t watch television or were recently in a coma, Comic-Con is the largest comic book and “popular arts” convention held.  It is based in San Diego and was attended by 125,000+ fans.  For four days crazed fans descend upon the San Diego Convention Center and surrounding Gaslamp District in search of a chance to preview new releases, attend panels with their favorite stars and creators and be totally immersed in the world of comic related and influenced entertainment. In a word it was overwhelming. In a slew of words I’d say; packed, frenzied, loud, exciting, exhausting and inspiring. As a trade show veteran, I thought I had seen it all. What follows are some observations and tips from a Comic-Con newbie…

cableshow

Last month the 2010 Cable Show took center stage at the LA Convention Center giving top executives from cable operators, content producers, distribution networks and technology companies a chance to get together and explore the continually evolving industry. Of course a bevy of cable celebrities were also there to provide entertainment including The Kardashian’s, Omorosa, Hulk Hogan and many more. You should have seen the lines for pictures!

Scott Seward, our President, and I attended to support our partners and keep tabs on the latest developments in the cable industry. One particularly hot topic this year was EBIF, the industry supported Enhanced Binary Interchange Format being integrated into Comcast’s Xfinity Remote and other devices.  There was also a lively general session that brought together CEOs of from top cable, tech and entertainment companies for a discussion on evolving business models.  The panel emphasized the importance of ensuring that technology not be a barrier to content creators.   If you missed the show, don’t fret:  many of the individual sessions are recapped on the Cable Show Blog.

lafilmfest2

This week is the kick off to the 16th annual Los Angeles Film Festival. The festival is running from June 17th to the 27th and this time around it’s located all around downtown LA with over 200 feature films, documentaries, shorts and music videos to screen.

Typically every year I try and catch at least one or two films at the fest. In year’s past I’ve seen such films as Hump Day, Choke and Paper or Plastic. The music video collections are always fun too. They remind me of the days when I would watch MTV and they’d actually show music videos!

NBC Universal Studio Operations has a fantastic, content rich website that describes and promotes their studio facilities.  To further improve their site, NBCU wanted to streamline it for location scouts, producers and directors touring the backlot.  This was accomplished by auditing the primary website for the most relevant content and redesigning it for mobile displays.  The site puts all the most important information at the finger tips of filmmakers while keeping their other hand free to steer the golf cart.  Fire up your BlackBerry or iPhone browser today and have a look!

PANTONE just released it’s new PLUS SERIES adding an astonishing 566 new colors to it’s current PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®. Within this new addition of colors they have added 224 new solid colors based off of the 14 Basic Color Inks. This brings the total of solid colors now to 1,341. They have also added 42 new neon colors and 300 new metallic colors. This brings the grand total of PANTONE colors to 5,024. A huge leap from when PANTONE first started making their color guides in 1963 when they only had 500 colors.

Who knew he could “Master” such heartfelt vocals? Check out Master Chief singing “One more snipe, gimme one more snipe” and “I can feel it comin’ in the air tonight, HALO.”  My old pal Jon Watts is one of the founding fathers of Waverly Films, and I recently discovered this among many hilarious gems on their YouTube channel, Waverly Flams. Other favorites: Hollywood Pitch, Wizards Meetup and Pick Up the Phone.
