The past month at Tuesday has been a whirlwind of excitement due to the launch of our new iPad app, Kandoobi – Animal Edition!

Developed by our R&D team, Tuesday Labs, it’s an app geared towards the toddler and preschool crowd.  It features four independent modes:  letters, coloring, scratch & fill, and matching.  The programming side of things gave our developers some interesting challenges, but we also kept the art team on their toes by creating a whole world of characters.  The app features over 100 animals that span obvious picks like dogs and cats, but also includes some more interesting animals like manatees, anteaters and we couldn’t resist a honey badger.   We’ve tested it with several classrooms of kids ranging from 18 months on up to 5 years old and it’s been a big hit.    We have several 5 star ratings on the App store and we’d love to see more – download it today and let us know what you think!

iPad

It’s a plane, it’s a hot air balloon, no wait it’s just Angry Birds flying around on the iPad!  With over 250,000 apps available in the iTunes App Store, I wanted to know not just what people downloaded, but what they were using and playing.  I asked just about every person that I encountered that has an iPad to see what they were actually doing with their iPad and what apps they couldn’t live without.  Here are just a few of the favorites…

amplitube-irig-ik100722-irig-ipad-01
As a fan of the desktop version of Amplitube, the idea of carrying around a bunch of guitar effects in my pocket is pretty cool. It’s not without a hefty price tag, relatively speaking. First off, how do you plug a guitar into your iPhone and how do you get quality sound out of it. Well, that’s what the iRig does, it adapts the 1/4″ to a 1/8″ jack that plugs into the headphone jack of your iPhone while still providing a second headphone input for your best set of headphones. Amplitube provides a free version, but if you’re going so far as to buy hardware for this, you’re not downloading the free version, you’re going for broke and spending $39.99 for your iRig and $19.99 for 12 pedal effects and 3 amp rigs. Of course you’re free to keep spending at the IK Multimedia Add-Ons store where you can continue to amass dozens of new effects pedals and more! Watch the demo

iPad or iPhad? You Decide.

So it’s been a few weeks since I started my iPad experiment. Being a gadget guy, I knew I would have to have one, I just didn’t know where or how it would actually fit into my business and personal life. While it’s still too early to say any habits have formed, I have made the following observations…

Can you give up your Cable/DSL/Fiber-optic internet service? On a whim, I decided to put my cable internet service on hold for a while just to see if I could use my iPhone and it’s unlimited data plan for all my browsing needs. I’m not a heavy internet user, but I was actually very surprised at how much data I do consume over the month, yes there’s an app for that! In this two part series, I’ll cover my experience using a jailbroken iPhone to tether, the second installment will be about connectivity with Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G, with my final thoughts on the two methods.

Use Flash to build iPhone applications (image from http://www.mikechambers.com)

With the next iteration of Flash (CS5) developers will be able to build, compile, and submit complete applications for the iPhone, using the Flash code libraries. Included in Flash CS5 are code libraries for smartphone support, multi-touch, accelerometer, screen orientation and RAW microphone access. Support is not just limited to the iPhone, the Palm Pre, Android, and Windows Mobile devices will also be supported. Building iPhone apps through Flash will be similar to building AIR applications. The build of the project will almost be the same except for a few new guidelines to follow, but compiling and testing iPhone apps built in Flash is slightly different. The time spent compiling is longer than average Flash or AIR builds. In order to compile, the developer must have the proper certificates and developer seeds installed. Once compiled, the application will have to be added to iTunes then synced to a device. Adobe is working on a device simulator to mimic the accelerometer and allow GPS testing from the desktop. A public beta for Flash CS5 is promised by the end of the year.

I went for a 30 mi. bike ride yesterday along the Santa Ana river — which like all great SoCal rivers, resembles an infinite concrete half-pipe more than a body of water. I don’t have a proper backpack for cycling yet, which left me without a place to stash a camera. Enter Camerabag, one of my favorite iPhone apps. See More
